The tone of this post might be more terse than usual as I’m in a bad mood having just lost several days fighting with the incredibly unstable SMB software in macOS Mojave 10.14.5.

The server load in our office usually averages 10-15 users, all sharing files to and from several basic SMB sharepoints hosted from a Mac Mini. The macOS Server.app is installed but only used for configuring local network users.
This basic arrangement has been quite stable for several years. The smbd file-sharing daemon occasionally hangs under Mojave, but this can be fixed quickly by running sudo killall smbd -SIGQUIT.
When we updated to 10.14.5, all Hell broke loose. SMB will hang very frequently, sometimes after 10 minutes, other times, if we were really lucky, an hour plus.
The worst part is that the SMB server errors were also crashing user’s computers when they accessed the share. Multiple machines around the office were suddenly hanging, with no recovery options except a hard restart.
One or two crashing computers can be dealt with. I honestly can’t recall ever having to deal with an issue where one computer could hard crash a half-dozen of its neighbors.
Not yet knowing this was a broader issue, I assumed something broke on our end. After two days of constant headaches, I tore down the whole server, systematically checking all the external drives and their power supplies. Everything checked out, and the server seemed good again. Several hours later, my false sense of confidence was dashed as the rebuilt server went right back down and took three users along with it.
I attempted to rollback the server to 10.14.4 — but that fell apart again after 12 hours. Finally, I reverted to a months old 10.13.6 backup. This is stable, the office can get back to work again.
This is not a long term solution. I’m not feeling at all confident in Apple’s ability to deliver the software our business depends on for file sharing. After 20 something years running a variety of Mac-based file servers, I’m now looking at a few Docker-based solutions, possibly even Windows Server.
P2p File Sharing Programs For Mac
Despite the population of people running Mac-based file servers being pretty small, I was able to find quite a few accounts of similar issues:

- mac&egg recommends switching to AFP in Fix: macOS 10.14 Mojave SMB does not work, Finder crashes, but switching to a deprecated protocol doesn’t seem like a a good idea, won’t work with APFS volumes and is a non-starter in a mixed platform workspace.
